This Summit is unique in that we are treating gender inequity in U.S. entertainment media as a civil rights dilemma. The exclusion of female voices and perspectives from our nation’s cultural narrative is having dire national and global repercussions. We believe that solving this problem is both a legal and moral imperative. In order to advance women’s rights and human rights everywhere we think women must control their own messaging; strategizing immediate action to assure this is the objective of the Summit. Four winners of the second annual Horizon Award were announced today ahead of the kickoff of the Sundance Film Festival. The award seeks to identify and mentor talented, up-and-coming female directors early in their development. Cassian Elwes, Lynette Howell Taylor and Christine Vachon are co-founders, and the winners will also receive grants from the Adrienne Shelly Foundation which supports artistic achievements of female filmmakers. Ceremony is Sunday, January 24, 6:30pm at the WireImage Portrait Studio at Village at the Lift, Park City, Utah.

In 90 minutes, director Kate Perotti introduces viewers to a half-a-dozen bands from around the U.S. with colorful names: The Mydols, The Bettys, Motherload Trio; and even more colorful song titles: “Eat your Spaghetti or Leave the Room”; “Skating Mom Blues”; and “Wal-Mart Woman.”

My Creative Director and I recently met filmmaker Kate Perotti at PhotoPlus New York. We were really impressed with her creativity in filmmaking and photography and were intrigued to hear about her project “MOMz Hot ROCKs: the women of Mamapalooza” which is a feature length original music documentary following moms in rock bands. The film has been really well received at many film festivals and recently won the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the Rhode Island International Film Festival.
